I'd suggest Contact by Carl Sagan and the movie adaptaion of the book with the same title (starring Jodie Foster). It deals with S.E.T.I. (search for extra-terrestial intelligence). The Core is another movie (though exagerated at times) which deals with the electromagnetic field surrounding the earth.

It's a bit on the biological side but try "The Andromeda Strain"

'THE TIME MACHINE' by H.G. Wells. It's pretty famous and a rather spooky book.
