They pass down what they have been taught, unexamined.
I believe it is the duty of every person living to examine what he or she has been taught. That includes parents.
Frankly, to me, a parent who teaches their children bigotry CHOOSES to do so. Nobody is putting a gun to their heads and telling them they have to teach their children to hate. They could challenge the thoughs and decide to not pass them down. They could examine bigotry and decide it is wrong.
They do not.
I have told this story before. Here is how I learned about bigotry.
I had a freind... I was about 7. I was born in Canada and my father and myself came to America right before this (there was not much racism in the part of Canada from whence we hailed before this move). Ok, back to my friend: she had very dark skin and was called "Black".
One day I was walking with her and some bullies rode by on bicycles and started hollering 'N*gger!" at her and "N*ggerlover" at me. She dropped her head. I asked what that meant and she would neither tell me or look up.
I went to my father that night and asked what this meant.
Very sadly, he told me. This was a long, painful discussion for the two of us... he had not been looking forward to telling me about this. He HAD told me to be careful who to tell MY ethnicity due to the probability of being beaten and spat upon to but he had not gone into "n*gger" and the lot.
That was the day I truly learned about racism.
What did I do the next day? I invited my dark skinned friend over to dinner, as was rather normal. Her parents liked myself and my father and my father liked her and her parents.

Usually it is because that is the way they were raised. It is all they know. It is a vicious cycle that is hard to break because of ignorance.
