cricket gives that "kick in the nerves" for which Indians are addicted is not offerred by many other sports
Indian cricket gained popularity by winning the 83 world cup and it got lot of sponsership bcz of that they produce results periodically..which is not done by other sports team in India

Alternative is to encourage people to follow other sports which basically require inspiration..
Like Bengal is crazy about football bcz mohan bagan does quite well..people were crazy when sania mirza achieved "just something"..but now she is lagging..so obviously people dont care until she wins something again..
Long time back, people were crazy about Anand, the chess guy, but once he lost charisma by not winning the title from Kasparov people care no more about chess..

People paid attention when Limba ram, the archer, leonder pace and PT Usha promised something, but they didn't deliver p to expectations..

Many umpire decisions went against SL which cost their victory in the world series. Lot of infield controversies between the teams such as Mcgrath calling Jaysuriya a black monkey which was mentioned in Roshan Mahanama's book. Though Mcgrath refused it, considering the hate campaign went against SL, his name calling on Sanath should be true.
