is it an ion thang?

Yes it is an ion thing.
There are tons of negatively charged ions at the ocean.
This actually increases serotonin levels in the brain, and enhances the body's ability to absorb oxygen.
The effects of allergens are also greatly reduced.
Growing up, we lived in the Silicon Valley, about 45 minutes away from the ocean. The whole family had allergies.
In addition to going for the pleasure of the beach, when our allergies became unbearable, we'd go to the ocean and wade in it-ahhhhhhhhh, so much relief!
I also noticed it helped with severe asthma, seems to reduce inflammation of the airways.
Any environment we find ourselves in imparts something to us , body, soul, and spirit. Besides the soothing rhythm of the waves and the awe inspiring beauty, the ocean has some very tangible benefits from all those ions.
Enjoy!

Now you have me wondering why my last 4 places that I have lived have been near a body of water...It brings a sense of peace. When work and the daily hassles of life get to me, I just go down to the shore and look over the water and my blood pressure neutralizes. It brings a calming effect like no other. I like to go down to the shore and watch the sunset because it grounds my lack of importance in this world. It soothes my soul and makes me look at the bigger picture in life.

Of course, there are demographics and recreational activities that attract a lot of people, but nothing beats looking over a body of water to have peace and a sense of perspective in this world.

It might have to do something with historical development patterns. In recent history, many cities have been developed in coastal sites for trade purposes and many people have moved to these areas.

From there, the attraction to the coast can be because of culture, aesthetics, marketing, the fact it is a site of development, biophysical reasons, whatever.....

I dont know but I must admit I am one of those people. I live in Cornwall, England and every morning when I open the curtains I smile at the beautiful view of the coast.

It's one of mother nature's wonders. It's absolutely beautiful..

and it's not something I get to see everyday. I've only been there 3 or 4 times in my life. It is now highly unlikely I'll ever be able to visit again.

I think it might be just because it's different. I, however, live in colorado springs, CO. Theres a man made lake...but I'm not very attracted to it.

(Hey! were 2/3 water (or so I've been told) so maybe that's it)

The sea was our ancient home. We are attracted to it subconsciously.
