Please don't judge America by the arrogant and self centered comments you received. I am American, and I am disgusted with what our culture is turning into. Especially with the whole brainwashing being done by our government to force us into believing that all those in the middle east are barbaric and NEED the US to help them.
Honestly, I think they were better off without us butting our noses in where we don't belong. In these people's heart of hearts they know just how screwed things are, but chose to live in denial because the truth will devastate them too much, and they try to cover it up by defending the hell out of our mistakes and trying to tear down those who disagree.
I have also heard that the American culture is shown across the world with images of Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, Lindsey Lohan, and probably the worst, our "devastation" over Anna Nichole smith's death. This is all our media, that forces this BS down our throat as well. It is a bad influence on our children, as well as others worldwide. It's disgusting.

There are plenty of middle class Americans who disagree with all of this and are disgusted. But we have little voice here.

I have always had a lot of respect for Australia, and their ability to stay out of political worldwide affairs. I have considered moving ere many times but $$ doesn't allow it.

I feel sorry for the Americans that aren't ingnorant and arrogant and it's wrong for us to assume they all are. Probably because they are such a large country it would be difficult for them to realise that there is a world outside of the USA. Some appear to believe the rest of the world live in caves and that the USA is the shining light. Unfortunately they seem to be blind to the fact that so many of their own people are poor and homeless and that they don't have as much freedom as they'd like to believe.
Sure, like everyone else, they need to take part in the world community which at times means taking aggressive steps to pull rogue states into line but these decisions need to be made from a moral standpoint, backed by the majority (UN etc.), not based on oil and wealth making opportunities.

By the way Jeanette, FYI - Russell Crowe is from New Zealand and Mel is one of you (he was born in the US and has always considered himself American). The Tassie Devil was a creation of Looney Toons, an American company, it's not our cartoon.
Let me give you a tip, a little research goes a long way.

I'm sorry you've had a bad experience with my fellow countrymen. I will not accept responsibility for their stupidity, because that would make me into a demi-Atlas and my shoulders are already sore.
Many americans are rude, yes. And yes, even more of them are aggressive (who wants to go to war?). Regardless, there are still some good ones in the US, people who are kind and intelligent and would have responded with understanding to your question. I have chatted with a couple of them on this site before, but believe me it is a rarity when I come across another compassionate intelligent american.

If it makes you feel any better, the good americans probably don't give Yahoo Answers the time of day just because of the sheer amount of bigotry/stupidity/worthlessness on this site. This is what I like to imagine when I'm scrolling (hopelessly, addictedly) through questions trying to find ones worth answering. Thanks for giving an insomniac something to do, and sorry you came up with the bottom of the barrell. We're not all bad.

I didn't see your original question, but just for the record, we're not all so single minded and blind to all other cultures,, values and beliefs. I think the Americanization of the entire world is having devastating effects. While there are many things I appreciate and even love about the United States, there are many (MANY) things that embarrass, frustrate and sadden me. Many Americans don't recognize the variety of cultures, values and beliefs in this world. Many who DO see these things believe these differences are somehow less desirable and should be influenced to change.

If everyone lived like citizens of the United States we'd need a few more scores of Earths, full of resources. This is just one example to demonstrate my point.

Hang in there and don't hate everything "American." We're not all so bad. :)

Hello! deborah a.
As I have said many times before.
If it were not for the American General Macauthur ,we would not be Australia as we know today.
America is our Ally.
When I hear comments such as"only from America!
Which to me is a silly statement.
What people are saying is that we Aussies don't have a brain to to do our own thinking!
A lot of wonderful things are created in America.
And because of this we enjoy them.
The ones who muck rake my question is' Do you but Mac Donalds take away? do you enjoy hungry Jacks ,how about going to the movies, what about the people who wear certain name tags such as in clothing, shoes sports bags etc!
Don't blame America or anyone else for our own short comings.
If certain Aussies or anyone else do not like the American influence simple Don't use or buy the product!!
But there are many who do so let us live and let live!

Take care!

Hey Deborah ..
yep you hit a nerve .. but as you have read from the list of answers here .. there are some really very decent and nice american people .. infact I would say that they are in the majority .. it's just a few noisey jackasses that give the rest a bad name .. they are over sensitive, critical if their flaws are pointed out and don't they just get damn pi$$y over it as well..

BUT .. my advice to you :) is to ignore those ones and zone in on the nice ones .. as they are really are some of the world's best people ( the NICE ones . not the nosiey pi$$y ones), they are worth the time to get to know.

Americans are hated because of their leaders and messing in the affairs of other countries.
American influence on Australian children is pretty bad and so is Australian influence on Australian children.
I am Australian.

Rude and Aggressive?
Two of your nations national icons are the definition of aggressive
Crododile Hunter and Crocodile Dundee
always throwing around and wrestling those poor little defensless crocks. Ya and you know what else you actors that come out of your country are rude........Im thinking of a certain
Aussie name Russell Crowe....uh...let me see was it a cell phone or actual land line phone he chucked at that poor hotel clerks head. Last time I checked it was rude to make anti semetic remarks about Jews and then make insulting comments to a female police officer. I know he was drunk but dang Mel Gibson was my favorite aussie. Even your cartoon the tazmanian devil is irritating. So you want to talk rude and aggressive I think you need to take the trash out of your own house before you start complaining about others trash stinkin.

It seems like that is what you are trying to do, hit a nerve. Why make such a stupid statement. I read the answers of the question you are refering to and there is nothing there that could be interpreted as rude or aggressive other than your statement.

I have been to Australia in Freemantle, and all the people were nice. I'm surprised at how you are so much different than they were.
