First consider example below:-
Examples
9 less than 12 = 12 - 9
9 less than 20 = 20 - 9 and therefore
9 less than y = y - 9.
However if you mean "y is less than 9", then this is written as y < 9 (y at the small end of <)
Similarly if you mean "y is greater than 9", then this is written as y > 9 (y at wide end of >)
