they certainly are, if they were not where the image or the idea came from? can you make up or think of sth that never existed or never exists? well, whatever images we imagine or make up, they are not true, most of them are false images we just make up without any true existance, but they are based on facts, and have gotten roots from the realities of existance of such creatures. however, we just add some make ups in 'em and try to make a new creature.
