It's important to be consistent so many people get off to a strong start and then in a few weeks slack off once the honeymoon period is over.
Be honest, if you need help ask for it. It's better to get help if you need it rather than work on a project and not meet expectations. Show up 5-10 minutes early. Be courteous, dress appropriately. Do not use company time for personal endeavors such as email, Internet, phone calls, testing, etc.
Don't get involved in company gossip, etc. Do your best at all times. And you should be just fine. If you are given a project you or duty you have experience in but they handle it with a different procedure don't try to change everything at first. Don't bombard your boss with 'new' suggestions. Unless you were hired to overhaul the systems. But don't be afraid to mention similar projects you've tacked etc.
If after a few weeks you feel you can make suggestions then do so but get the feel of the office first.
I'm sure you'll do fine the very fact your asking the question shows that you care. The other number one point I have is be teachable, there are so many people even those with high education who are just not teachable or trainable. This is one of a managers biggest complaints.
Don't be afraid to take notes either. Learn people's names, etc.

Do your job better than he expected you to. Work hard at it and don't spend your time looking at Answers or any other Internet site. Arrive 5 minutes early every day and leave at least 10 minutes late every evening. Ask him to assist you in learning about all aspects of the companies business and get to know your colleagues. Do not gossip to him about others.

The best way is to always be honest. Ask questions of him/her if you don't understand what he is looking for. Always put your hand up if you make a mistake, he/she will admire you for this. Being willing to help others in the team is always appreciated. Of course the basics of arriving on time, taking correct breaks and leaving on time is always a must! Try to have fun aswell. A sense of humour is always good. The important things are to try your best, be honest, and enjoy your work and your relationship with him/her. Hope this helps.

Work hard, be punctual, be interested in the job/company. BUT don't be a brown-nose! You'll make a rod for your own back in the long run.

don't take your breaks instead...
1) buy his lunch
2) pick up his dry cleaning
or
3) clip his toenails
and on the weekends take some time out to...
1) mow his lawn
or
2) wash his car
