I dont want to go to the doctor and i cant talk to anyone about it because i only live with my dad. I believe my sister gets it irregularly too and she is 19 so it is genetic. What could be wrong?

Consistently skipping periods is called amenorrhea. It isn't normal, but it's not uncommon. It is usually a symptom caused by some other problem. It could be stress, excessive/strenuous exercise, low body fat/drastic weight loss, hormonal imbalance, prescription meds, drugs, fever, poor diet, or something affecting the ovaries such as tumors.

You should talk to a doctor because skipping periods for a long time can leave you infertile, and just in case the cause is something more serious than stress.

You're probably fine. But now that you've had your first period, you should get a check up by the gyno once a year. My period is never normal & never has been since I first got it at 14, and now I'm 27. I go to the gyno & nothing is wrong with me, it's just the way my period is. If your sisters is irregular too, it probably is genetic, but make an appointment to get checked out just to be sure. I did & my parents never had to know about it, it's all confidential.

I too had very irregular periods as a teenager. It turned out that I have Poly Cystic Ovaries. Generally, my hormones were out of whack and therefore did not give me the required hormones to give me my periods. Occassionally I would get cyst, sometimes painful and sometimes not. I did go to a GP were they gave me an ultrasound as well as regular blood test and it took hardly no time for my doc to realise what the case was and prescribed the treatment. Don't be scared, just get to a trusted GP and talk with them.

I too am 17 and only get my period 2-3 times a year. If you are really thin or athletic that could affect the number of times you get it.

You really should discuss this with a doctor. It could just be that your genetics have you and your sis starting later than most people. But there could be other more problematic reasons.

It might be normal but it does sound odd. You should talk to a doctor about it. They're really very understanding and helpful. And better yet, they may be able to determine if it is normal or not and take a huge load off your mind.

so many things could be causing this but no it isn't normal and yahoo is not the place for an answer...you have to see a doctor if it's really important for you to find out..even though you are only seventeen, what you say to your doctor is between you and her/him...nothing will be told to your dad unless you say so...good luck and I hope you go!!!!!!!!
