Wife and I are backpacking around the PI. We want to find an economical way to get from Manila to Boracay. Time is not very important, wish to avoid flying if possible. But dont want to spend 3 weeks on a donkey to get there.

Contact a travel agent. I bet they can find a good solution. However, I think flying is the best option for you. You might be able to find some good deals if you plan in advanced.

Take the superferry economy class from Manila to Iloilo. From the superferry pier in Iloilo at Port San Pedro take the Iloilo City to Jaro Jeepney. At Jaro Plaza get off and take the Jaro to Leganese/Zarraga Jeepney to the Ceres Bus terminal on The national highway just past the Land Transportation Office in Jaro.

It's a 14 hour overnight trip to Iloilo by Superferry and aprox. 6 hours to the pier for the pumpboat ride to Boracay beach.

cheapest way to Boracay is thru the Ro-ro system, however it will take almost a day to get there.

==========================

From Manila take a bus to Batangas port in Araneta Cubao Terminal (2hrs ride). From Batangas, you can reach Caticlan by car or bus via the Strong Republic Nautical Highway, which provides access from Batangas, Luzon, Cagayan de Oro and Mindanao. You can also take a Roll-On Roll-Off (RoRo) which departs daily from Batangas and takes you to Calapan, Mindoro. From there you can either drive a car or take a mini-van or air-conditioned bus to Roxas, Mindoro, where another RoRo vessel will take you to Caticlan. You can leave your car at a secured parking lot for a fee. Cars are not permitted on Boracay Island.

Take a boad ride from Caticlan which takes around 20-25 minutes to designated stations along the main White Beach. There are 3 Boat Stations along the main beach. Depending on the resort you intend to stay at, the boat will drop you off at the nearest station. Departure from the island is also done by waiting at the station for specific boat pick-up times.

The cheapest way to go to Boracay is via ro-ro or book ahead at least 3months via Cebu Pacific or Philippine airlines to avail of a promo. If ro-ro, there are buses in Cubao direct going to Caticlan pier (total travel hours is around 18-19) and the fare is around P900/pax. from Caticlan, ride a boat and need to pay environmental & terminal fee at the pier. Boracay island has 3 boat stations in the main beach but now to preserve the beauty of it all boats are strictly dock at the back of the island. from there you will ride a tricycle going to the resorts where you will be. pls check my profile for further assistance.

i discovered recently that the posted travel rates of hotels, airlines, etc are actually too high even with their so-called "promotions"
check out this URL: precisionrates.com
this site gave my uncle a room in a hotel for $60+ when the tariff and even the people from the hotel were telling him $198+
i hope you also find the most affordable yet comfortable and safe way to boracay without getting ripped off.

The quickest way is to fly by Philippines or Cebu Pacific, you will land in Panay probably at IloIlo and take a boat trip to Boracay from there. It is cheaper and longer to get there by ferry - but I would not trust these too much. You will still need to get to Ilo Ilo and get the boat from there.

We took a ferry once, MBRS. It left Manila in the evening, we ate dinner on the boat and then had breakfast the next morning. We arrived in Boarcay that morning. I do not remember the cost but it was cheap. They have no website however...

Why bother ? Borocay is a dump. Go to Thailand where tourists are treated with a modicum of respect.
