what sort of product can i use to melt snow or ice that is safe for lawns AND animals. salt isn't good for either, sand gives traction, but doesn't actually MELT the ice or snow...

at least i'm smart enough to figure out that electricity and melted snow don't go TOO well together without experimenting...

I love the radient heat idea, and will probably go that route when i get my house, but i'm in an apt now.

Taking an electric hair dryer outside to melt snow and ice is pretty much a death sentence!!! DO NOT DO IT!!!

Calcium chloride... the little white pellets work very well. Rock Salt, will attract deer in some areas. Remember that the temperature needs to be at least 20*F for either product to be truly effective. If you are experiencing bitter Arctic cold, stick with the sand until it warms up a bit.

Another option..... and one that would be a MAJOR expense, yet raise the value of your home would be to install a radiant heat system under your walk and driveways. Probably not the most economical option, but it would eliminate any need to salt or sand these areas.

I would visit your local hardware, farm supply or Home depot and do some first hand comparison shopping to truly see what ice melt product is right for your needs.

As long as it is'nt "Rock salt", Calcium Chloride (the white one) is safe to use.
