You should talk to your doctor. I don't think having the odd glass of lager and lime will hurt. Remember everything you drink your baby drinks so as long as its not in excess you'll be fine. I also see heavily pregnant women puffing away which I think is wrong as baby will get the smoke as well. (thats just my opinion I'm not knocking anyone that smokes while pregnant my mom did with me and I'm fine)

everything you ingest into your body is going to effect your baby. you shouldn't drink more than 3 ounces of wine, say for dinner. smoking may cause premature and low birth weight. i smoke and my first baby weighed in at 10 1/2 pounds. my other 3 were all between 8 and 9 pounds. so i don't know about that. i doubt if an occasional SMALL glass of lager and lime is going to hurt anything. might even do some good. congratulations on your new baby.

My understanding is that any intake of poisons or intoxicants is concentrated through the placenta. It is also possible that the developing foetus may be influenced by sounds or even the pervading mood of mum.
This would explain why a lot are subconsciously drawn towards smoking and drinking although i don't know how true this is.
If any of my kids develop a taste for cheese, pickled onions and French toast, I will know there is some truth in it!!!
Cigarettes contain a whole range of nasties, the most dangerous of which possibly are trace elements such as Lead, Cadmium, Zinc, Aluminium etc. So potentially the impact could be quite severe. The nicotine may also produce cravings within the baby and let's face it, who would shove a ciggy in their newborn baby's mouth instead of formula or breast milk???
Remember, when u smoke, the kid smokes too.
have a nice sunday.
hugs xoxox

The odd drink will not hurt, but I do mean the odd one, and absolutley not spirits. A half of lager and lime would be ok, as long as that was as much as you had, and only say once every two or three weeks. A small glass of wine would be okay too, but that would be all.
Smoking is never good for babies, and to be honest, it would be better not to drink, but don't fret if you have just the odd tiny dose. I would mention it to your midwife, see what she says.

Smoking is worse, a small glass of wine or lager and lime is fine occasionally when pregnant. My mother-in-law, used to get constant cravings for lager when she was pregnant with my husband, did not do him any harm, it even helped her make more breast milk. Dont be paranoid, indulge now and then, you deserve to live a little too you know - Just dont go nuts!!!

Personally i think smoking. So many people have told me that a glass of wine wont hurt every so often. As long as your not on weekend binges i dont think you should feel bad. Ill b 5 mth pregnant by the time my 21st comes round and will certainly b having 1 or 2 glasses of wine. x

I think smoking is worse. An occasional drink isn't bad, but drinking like an alcoholic could be very dangerous.
I had a friend that didn't know she was pregnant for three months. We used to go out on a Sat. every weekend drinking and dancing. Then she found out she was pregnant and starting freaking out because she had been drinking.
The baby was fine. He's now 18 years old and graduating at the top of his class. He was always extremely smart, even as a baby.
Almost everyone that smokes, ends up having underweight and sick babies.

I think smoking is much much worse and having the odd small glass of wine of half a lager in my opinion is fine. Do not feel bad. As long as it is kept to a minimal you'll be fine..

Alcohol is worse. Alcohol causes fetal alcohol symdrome, which causes brain defects and retardation, though mostly only if used in large amounts. Smoking, however, only causes low birth weight and a slightly higher chance of asthma later in life. It does not put cyanide on/in the baby, as many people seem to think, and won't kill it or retard it. Neither is good, but I'd choose a 6 pound baby over a retarded one any day, if I could choose (not that I'm smoking or drinking).
