I'd say that music sets a mood. I know that when I work, I like to listen to music. It also increases certain neurotransmitters in the brain. People become more productive.
A study showed that music might even help in glaucoma patients. Patients were given music while doing a perimetry test to check for retinal damage. They did better than with out music.
Music sets the mood for romance too. A man and woman are more likely to kiss and become intimate with music playing.

I think it's because we identify with it. I like everything but rap and hip hop.
I have a large collection of all other music.
I have noticed that I listen to the different types of music, depending on the mood I'm in. I have even picked some celtic music that I want played at my funeral.
Good curious question.

What about everything! I mean, music makes the world go round. Without it the world wont be the same. Think about it, Music is like the air we breath. It's needed in this world for lifting us up when we're down. For keeping us company when we're lonely. For inspiring us when we need inspiration. For giving the message when you cant shout out. For calming us when we need some space. It's there to keep us moving. To keep us alive and loving life all the way!

I think there is something inherently soothing, uplifting and emotional in music. Humans have had music in every culture for, like, ever! Whales and dolphins and many other species sing too. Not a very scientific answer, I know. For me, it just makes my ears and my soul smile.

Like others have said, it can relate to how they feel.
Other times I think people like certain kinds of music out of peer pressure to listen to no other kinds.
I love all kinds, there are some bands/artists I have liked from my earlier years to have gone to be outdtated now in my view as music changes constantly, but we can still respect the eras that have led to our modern music today.
This has to be something natural for mankind to have an ear in music, look at where we came from way back in Africa...modern tribes still use singing as a traditon, as they did thousand of years ago.
I think the love of music goes back to our ancestors way back in Africa, and have continued today.....
We wouldn't be as human if we lost it, it really helps us reflect our feelings good or bad, I think other sepecies use it too to communicate, such as birds and whales etc....it's natural and we will go through different beats to find ours, we will find something one day that will send a message to our ears. Hopefully it will a message of world peace! That day all people will be listening.

Music is fun. It is refreshing and soothes your tired mind. Teenagers like music to appear cool or stuff like that.

When someone smiles at me authentically and warmly...it fills my heart. Same thing with music. When I hear music...it touches my soul, brightens my heart, sends a surge through me. When I hear music that I enjoy...it awakens my soul...as food feeds my body.
