You can download ccleaner for free here: http://bit.ly/1Bk5V5C
First open CCleaner
Go to the Cleaner tab and you will be confronted by a very confusing lineup of checkboxes.
To make this brief, below is my recommended setup:
Under internet explorer check temporary internet files, cookies, and last download location. Most users don't really need this stuff. keep history and bookmarks unchecked, history is a maybe, but you don't want to lose bookmarked sites. You can normally leave Windows Explorer, System, and Advanced alone.
Run CCleaner and it will start deleting files.
afterward it will present you with a list of the files deleted, you really don't need to go through it as it will be several pages long.
The registry cleaner is recommended for slightly more advanced users. Use it after uninstalling programs as they will often leave behind incorrect registry entries.
If you decide to run Registry cleaner then review the items detected and always back up the registry (I keep a folder aside for this)
The Tools tab lets you uninstall programs and set startup programs. Why do you need this if Windows has all of these features? Especially with Vista Home Ed. The windows defender software explorer( startup programs) doesn't pick up some entries (however software explorer is easier to use).
Using CCleaner to uninstall programs and then check for leftover registry entries takes less time.
Under Options you can determine how CCleaner cleans your files. I leave this alone.

Read this article:
Why is My Computer Slow?
What Causes Windows Slowdown?
Here are some tips and free advice on fixing that bogged down PC.
There are several causes for windows to slow down. If you can remember a time when your PC ran faster, it is most likely due to program build up over time. A lot of software, especially the kind that is downloaded, like to run "in the background", meaning that every time you boot your system, it starts up. And this is not just trojans or spyware, but "legit" software like Quicktime or RealPlayer. This inevitably leads to a slow computer. Just like you give your car an oil change to keep the engine healthy, your computer needs maintenance as well. "Program buildup", "fragment buildup" and "file buildup" eat up your system resources. Here are some things you can do to help your system.
First of all, and this is rule #1. Be very wary about installing more software to speed up your computer. Because it is software that bogs down a computer, you should be very hesitant about installing yet more in order to help it. Only install programs that you absolutely trust.
Clean out your internet temporary files (tools-->options).
Search for and delete all temp files on your hard drive "*.tmp"
Double click the my computer icon and run a defrag on your hard drive. Make sure your drive is not compressed (this increases time to read/write files)
Cleanup your disk by using: Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Clean-up
Boot into safe mode (press F8 during the boot up) and disable unwanted services that may be starting up with Windows.
Open up the programs that run when windows starts, and look for a place to disable them from startup. Some applications may say "run in taskbar", this is what you do not want them to do.
Add more memory. While this is certainly an option that costs money, it is by far the best thing you can do to increase computer hardware performance for minimal cost. Adding RAM is the best "bang for the buck" you can do when it comes to improving hardware.

Could be yes. Have it all burnt to discs then delete it from your computer. A good spyware and anti virus is what you'll need if you have people downloading a lot of stuff on your pc too, to protect it from any "nasty'" which are hidden in the downloaded files.
Also, if she's hell bent on downloading music and keeping it, do what I did and buy some more memory. It'll take her a while to fill up a nice huge chunk of memory and that'll generally get your PC speeding along anyway :)

not really unless she has about 40,000 tracks on the computer try downloading a ad ware remover then scan your computer that worked for me but if it doesn't its a sign that u need more ram i.e if you have 256 MB Ram then you could upgrade to a 512 MB Ram a place to buy these is ebuyer no not eBay but ebuyer.com check what Ram u have first at the end i.e 256 MB Ram it should say something like DDR or DDR2 make sure you buy a Ram that says DDR or whatever you need or it wont fit if that doesn't do it try getting some more memory added to ur computer or buy an external hard drive which are pretty cheap and put all her stuff on there.

It would be worth you downloading a very useful program called spybot search and destroy. This will scan your entire computer and find any nasty spyware that should not be there. The program is completely free and there are no hidden features or options. The website is:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
Just install the application and follow the instructions on screen, its all pretty straightforward.
And its guaranteed to find something on your computer even if you have one of the cleanest computers around.

its not because you have a lot of mp3s or other music files, I have hundreds and also loads of images both these items do take a huge amount of space, however it doest slow down my pc, only when im scanning it grrr, lol
so it look like your pc needs a good clean up, ie use an antivirus prog and a spy prog aswell as other have mentioned already, then use cleaner prog like Cc, before you close you pc every night, after all why bother to wait for your pc to load up all the old rubbish, makes sense eh.

Could well be. Have you got ant-spyware software? It would be worth running a full scan.
If the music is downloaded legitimately on something like iTunes then it shoiuldn't be a problem. You could check that she hasn't subscribed to any podcasts which may be downloading automatically in the background.

Yes. The more files i.e. programs, music tracks, pictures, Word documents etc etc stored on your hard drive the slower your PC will be.
Solution is to copy all music tracks on to CDs, MP3 player/ Ipod or get a USB plug in second hard drive and insist that all music tracks go on this.
