you didn't say what kind of plants, but most plants can be sprayed with a mixture of water and a little soap. This should kill the caterpillers if you don't want to use poison.

If they are black and orange and white they could be monarch larve. They are often striped catipillars. Depending on the plant you can spray, or plant other plants nearby. That will attract them away. Next time include the plant, and the area where you are growing.

Cats. I know it sounds crazy, but bear with me. Gather up some cats in your neighborhood. Two or three to start with. Kill them (humanely, of course), skin them, and make a nice kitty stew. Once the meat is tender, drain the liquid off using a hair net. Pour the liquid into a spray bottle and mist the plants during a full moon. Works every time.

We call those army worms. I shake Sevin Dust on the plants and watch them die. If I don't have Sevin Dust, I take a jar with ammonia, cover my hand with a plastic sandwich bag and pick the worms off and put them in the ammonia. They will lay eggs on the backs of the leaves and you will see tiny worms as they are hatching. Make sure you dust front and back of the leaves.
