... So i finally had my baby girl on Monday! WOOOHOOOO!! Anyway, I'm having trouble with her burping. After her feedings when we try to burp her, she barely burps and mostly spits up. Even in the hospital, I couldn't seem to get her to burp...only sometimes. I did bring this to the doctor's and nurses' attention. They did say that this is ok and that it's normal. They said that baby might not always burp, but so long as I try then it's ok, even if she doesn't. Now that she's home, I still got the same problem... barely burping (only sometimes) and spitting up. Like, while I'm trying to burp her, instead of a burp she spits up. But today, she threw up! Like, more than a spit up, it was more and more watery with white stuff in it, and it went all over her shirt, my shirt (didn't bother to put the burping cloth on my shoulder this time), the blanket and the boppy. I called a doctor and she asked how was I burping her and then recommended a different way to burp her.

I just wanted to know if anyone out there had this problem and what did you do about it.

NOTE: Breastfeeding ONLY ..no bottles and my burping style is putting her, facing towards me, on my chest and just simply patting and occasionally rubbing her back.

First of all... CONGRATS!!
I have a beautiful 8week baby girl. She also sometimes has a problem burping. Try sitting your baby up on your lap supporting her head and pat her back... also try rubbing her back in an upward motion... that seems to help our daughter burp. Also after you feed dont put the baby laying directly down... that also seems to cause spit-ups. Good luck!

Congratulations! I am sure she's a beautiful little baby.

The spit up? Three words: normal, normal, normal. And its heart breaking because you make all that good milk and she spits out almost everything she eats. You'll get some good news, I am sure, at her first check up, when she'll be back to her birth weight (newborns lose some while the milk comes in).

Remember, eating is a new sensation and at 5 days old, she's still cleaning out from being in the womb. True, you can check your feeding position and ensure she's latched on to reduce the amount of air she swallows, but really, spit up and newborns just go together.

Good luck and enjoy every moment. She won't be a baby for long.

With my first baby, if I didn't get a burp in the first 3 or 4 pats I wasn't getting one and she would usualy spit up if she didn't burp, w/ my second she was easy she burped just about every time. Try sitting her on your lap w/ you han suporting her head and chest while patting on the back.

my daughter was breast fed and spit up alot. I mean alot. it stained her clothes and I had a bib on her all the time. As far as not burping.. mine either.. I had to pound her back! She didn't seem to mind how rough it was! But she needed to be burped or else she would fuss and cry and cry and cry. I also found differetn positions help get the burps out. Try over your shoulder. Laying her on her stomach and over your knees and burp her. Try holding her diagnoly. Each time you switch her position, the air bubbles will shift in her body. Oh and CONGRALATIONS. My turn isn't till June

Try different burping styles. My daughter will not burp for bouncing, or rubbing or patting. It takes extreme bouncing to get her to burp. Try different things. Each child is different! Good luck on the future stomach pains in the middle of the night!!!
