Just go to free Linux downloads, and find Obunto Linux.... I believe it is the best and easiest desktop. And you only have to download all the software (desktop etc) for one CD, but be sure you have gone to c-net and downloaded a good ISO CD recording free software, because you have to burn image software from the download. Then all you have to do is put your new CD in and restart (this may intail going to you re bios screen to set up your boot sequence) and best of all Obunto does not install on your hard drive,it just lets you try out the desktop, and then if you like it you have the option of installing it. It will even let you keep your other OS IE dual boot

Assuming your drive is installed correctly, you insert the first bootable CD and boot to it. Follow the directions.
If you want to dual boot your system, you should make windows the first partition, then Linux. Also, Linux will require several smaller partitions.
The reason for windows to be the first partition, is so that it can read the disk format. Linux can read windows formats, but not the reverse.
