There was a great book written a number of years ago called "Lives on the Boundries" by Mike Rose which tells you exactly what is right about the America Educational System. After reading that book you will realize that education in America is really an amazing thing. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lives_on_the_Boundary for more about the book.

Good Luck!!!

I don't think the education system is all to blame. Bad parenting is more of the problem in my mind. You live in a country where fifty percent of the electorate believes the earth is less then ten thousand years old. It's a miracle the education system is doing as well as it is. There are certainly things that can be done though. Like perhaps stop making so many cuts to the school fund. We need to start paying teacher’s alot more so that the more educated will go for the position. There are a few private programs that are doing this. We need to stop funding worthless causes like wars. And start using it on education so there will be no war in the future.

While there is criticism of the education system "as a whole" (e.g., No Child Left Behind, etc.), when you get down to the micro level of individual schools the picture is a lot less bleak. I read two similar studies (one American and one Canadian) which showed that people were more satisfied with the school system the closer it got to their neighbourhood. "Schools in North America are on the decline, but the schools in Ontario are not as bad, and the ones in Toronto are pretty good, and the one a block from me is doing really well."

This finding was universal in both study areas.

If this is the case, then we have a whole bunch of people very satisfied with neighbourhood schools, even if there is dissatisfaction in the system as a whole. I would explain this by saying that schools are a lot more "human" when we look at the one down the block. We know the teachers, we know the kids, we know what's happening.

The United States of America is a super power. The liberal news media always tell the bad news because the good news stories are boring and would not sell air time or newspaper.

The best of the best is still in the U.S. our schools are not all needy and you only hear about the high failure rate but nothing of the success stories.

Go to the library of your city or better the local college or university. Ask the information desk for the literature you are looking for..Get off the internet and do some actual research in a controlled quiet environment. Good Luck

Everyone has the right to an education in this country--no matter race, socio-economic background etc. We have the capability to have a highly educated population. There are plenty of countries in the world--China being one of them--where this isn't true.

each year we receive a new batch of kids in our classrooms to help them on their way to life. Quickly we, as teachers, learn that the class is made up of the three c's of students. The Champs. Those that learn quickly and are very attentive and eager to learn, The Chumps. Those who are there to do just enough to pass and the Chimps who shall go undefined. As our time with them progresses, we guide, nurture and encourage these young people to face tomorrow with dreams, hopes and solid direction. We do succeed every year but, unfortunately those from the outside looking in to our zoo only see the chimps.

Pragmatism is usually applied in American education, and this is, what I think , is good.
