Toyota just came out with a new 5.7 liter v8 engine that makes 381 horsepower(i think)....Chevy's most powerful was 360 or somewhere in that range, and the Dodge Hemi is still 345. Do you realize that this is a power war, just like in the late 60's and early 70's?? Do you realize that in order to beat toyota, the next automaker will probably come out with an engine 400 hp or more?!?! that's insane! stock v8's pushing 400 hp...i wonder how long it will be before GM puts that 7.0 Corvette v8 into their trucks...505 horsepower oughta shut 'em up...at least for awhile...

Dennis, Chevy already has a hybrid Silverado on the market. Yes, people are looking to save gas, but you can't deny the battle for the title of having the most powerful engine available in a pickup that is going on among the major automakers right now. Thanks for your answer.

It's been going on for, gosh, 15 years. Remember the '92 Corvette with the crazy horsepower they got out of the LT1 version of the Chevy small-block? Without resorting to overhead cams!! GM is really really good at getting big horsepower out of old-tech V8s.

What really blows my mind is as these engines get more powerful, these engines get BETTER fuel economy, and run CLEANER (i.e. beat tougher smog laws).

What's funny is in the 1970s, the automakers could not envision this. They honestly believed the smog laws made it impossible to build a high horsepower engine. They successfully fought smog controls on trucks, because trucks needed the power. Sure enough, every year engines got weaker and weaker, as they blamed the emission controls. I think the small block Chevy V8 bottomed out at about 135 horsepower, in 1981 or so.

Chevy already has engines that put out more than 400hp. So your toyota and the Hemi are still behind. The thing is your talking about trucks. Trucks Suck Who cares.

Yeah, Cadillac has an experimental car pushing a 1000 hp in a V16 engine. That in a car now, would really shut them all down.
