Just to add to what is here, the whole "name a star after someone" is purely for entertainment. The only body that has the recognized authority to name stars is the International Astronomical Union (IAU), and they do not accept money to name stars. Many companies sell star names and will print you up a nice certificate and say something about how the name is published in a book that's part of the library of congress... that's great. Every book that get's published is in the library of congress. I can write a book that names every star after whatever I want and have it published. It doesn't make the name official.

It's a novelty item that has no real value, so you'd be wasting your money by doing it. Considering the fact that most people live in areas where the light pollution limits their sky view to less than 100 stars at any given time, the chances that they would ever be able to see the star that is "named" after them is slim to none anyway. It's a waste of money.

Well, you can't. You can only send money to a scam outfit that sends you a piece of paper saying you own one. Since there are so many ripoff companies doing this, I'm sure the same star is "owned" by many many people.Send me the money and I'll print you up a deed if you like.

I wouldn't buy a star. I would just claim one. If someone has a problem with that take it to court. The judge will just throw the case out.

You can't buy them. I own the flamin' lot and they're not for sale. I own all the stuff orbiting them too, including this planet and you all owe me back rent. Pay up or I'll send George to evict you.
