Well the first thing to check is your owners manual, and follow the recommendation in the manual. It will tell the type of fluid and how often it should be changed. With today's vehicles insuring that you have the proper transmission fluid, and change that fluid at the proper intervals can be critical to the life expectancy of your car.
Reference your manual, if not able to do that when visit the dealership, or the manufacturer.
I would not guess around with this, the wrong fluid may mean buying a new transmission.

Depends now. Get a Haynes Repair manual and it will tell you. Reason is the newer cars are more efficient now. But every two years is good. My Haynes says to change my automatic transaxle fluid, filter, and Magnet, every 30,000 miles or 24 months. That is what I do. The transaxle is the transmission fluid. High tech words now. lol

If you do it yourself, take the one line off the transmission and blow it out with compressed air. That way you can get the oil out of the radiator, where it goes to cool. Also use SYNTHETIC transmission oil and if your car does not have a magnet is the pan put one there. The newer cars will have them. Now if you are a stickler for changing fluid, you could buy the kit to put a drain plug for your tranny pan. Then you could change it like your oil. Of course after the second or third year you need to change the filter.

I'm assuming that u would know if your vehicle's motor has a seperate gearbox bolted to the bell housing and not an integral part of the mortor as is with front wheel drive vehicles, if the gearbox is bolted to the bell housing then the oil that you should be using is a high viscosity oil grade and is genraly known as Hypoid 90, if you are using the vehicle for normal driving conditions and driving it correctly you should only be topping up the level when neccessary and changing evry 5 or so years, as the oil is not exposed to load, excessive heat or residue chemicals from the spent fuels that the motor burns during combustion. if it is an automatic you should be running ATF fluid, and because of the heat generated by the friction bands the fluid tends to burn, this should be checked at your service intervals.

The answer really depends on the make and model of the car, an how it's driven. Whatever the case is, never believe in "lifetime fills". No transmission will last very long without ever changing the fluid.

it depends how you drive.if your pulling a trailer,or driving in heavy traffic, where you have to sit and idle a long period of time, then i would say change it more often, but if it all highway miles, around 60,000 miles of 6 months.if your stuck in heavy traffic for too long, throw the tranny up in neutral, that will help keep the tranny from getting too hot.also you have some idea when you look at the tranny oil, when you check it.if it looks dark, then its probably time for a change.also smell the oil,if it smells burnt, change the oil and filter.

A transmission mechanic I know changes it every 6-8 months. It's a little more frequent then recommended but it will help prevent problems in the future.

Most car makers recommend flushing and changing filter every 50K miles in normal use. Towing, hill climbing or racing trannys should be flushed more often.
