What is the proper name for the symbol ∴? It is shorthand for 'therefore'. Its inverted form, ∵ is shorthand for 'because'. It is not to be confused with an asterism, ⁂, which draws attention to something.

Square? If that is to be an insult, well excuse me for trying to be educated at the age of 14.

The guy before me said "square" because that's what's showing up in your question. It's just a big, empty square. I don't know what font you used, but it's not showing up.

Don't really think it has a name. Never heard/saw one all the way through four years and a BS in Mathematics. Always heard it called 'therefore symbol'.

I can tell you it goes back to the 1600's - probably in Germany. The inverted symbol (because) is much more recent (1800's). In early use, therefore was shown both ways (1 over 2 or 2 over 1). That tidbit is from a course called 'History of Mathematics'.

Every time I see that its in context like

5 * x = 0
∴ x = 0

the * is multiplication sign.
just read the ∴ as 'therefore' like in a sentence.
