What role do rocks have in the rock garden?
Rocks play an important role in the growth and health of many plants just as they do in their natural habitat. Rocks affect the immediate environment in a number of ways to allow the plants to flourish:
Rocks shelter seeds, allowing them to lodge and germinate,
Runoff from rocks provides supplemental water and nutrients that help the plant become established,
Shade from rocks keeps the soil around the plant from drying out and protects the plant's roots from heat from the sun,
Rocks also provide a protected, competition-free location in which the plant can thrive.
Best Wishes

Am I the only one that didn't get the reference to 1956's answer up there?
Rock gardens are beautiful, and there are a variety of plants especially suited to this. Trailing lobelia tumbling over rocks, patches of different kinds of thyme and alyssum in the cracks between rocks - it creates a very elegant theme that looks like it takes a lot of work to maintain but does not.

Rocks not only add dimension but enable plants to creep and spreadout to create an 'up' garden. a lot of different plants can look stunning, and even one or two can create a vision splendid. Also drainage is important with some rockplants which do not enjoy wet feet. Always check the planting directions .

The big secret about rock gardens is how it looks in the natural world.
Go to a place near your town and study the way it is lying in conjunction with all the other rocks....What im trying to say is that you dont lay them in one straight line....you can if you want to ,,,but rather zig zag and interlocking with each other. It looks more natural and it helps with the water not running away....this also gives some own personality to it as you laid it and you will feel good about your creation afterwards.
