your parents must have been very controlling over you, growing up, if you just recently realized this!
of course, everyone makes choices in their lives, every day. If you're not in control of a situation, then what good are you to anyone, including yourself?
it's a good feeling to know that you are responsible for your own decisions and that no one can make you do something you don't want to do.
don't have any regrets, though. you learned from this, and you now have the tools to carry on with your life with that knowledge.
don't worry about what other people say, and don't do something because you want to make 'them' happy. If no one is happy with your decision, or choice, then that's something THEY need to deal with, not you. It's not up to you to please everyone, because that's just not realistic.
Don't take on everyone else's 'garbage', if they don't agree with you. What you decide to do in life, is your choice, alone, and you know, in your heart, what's right and wrong, so, as long as you're okay with your decision, then it's all good!
I'm glad you came to this realization, though. Some women, especially, live their whole lives, with that 'conditioned belief' that they are living their lives for someone else. They go through life doing things that make someone else happy, even if it's not what they want.
So, you're doing the right thing by standing up for yourself, and making choices on your own.

Oh, yeah...sometimes there's too many choices. Hard to make decisions at times. I've always been stubborn and wanted to do what "I" wanted to do. I never asked for people's opinions much. Still don't very often. I know I'm the only one that can make a choice I can live with or not. Some people are always asking me what I think about this or that ? Sometimes it's about their clothes. If I tell them I don't like it...it hurts their feelings. But I'm not going to lie and pretend I like it when I don't. This is why I know better than to ask people's opinions about things...you are going to make your own choice, anyway. Why drag others into the equation ???

I know what you mean. When I first moved out on my own, it was odd being able to decide things on my own - even simple things like when to eat dinner. I grew up having dinner at 6... it was hard for me to realize I could do what I wanted, make up my own mind. Congrats for your husband not taking advantage of your "good little girl" mindset and teaching you to be your own person. Congrats!
