One of the few times these two Hall of Fame Quarterbacks went head to head in a meaningful game happened on Monday Night Football in 1993. Montana had just been traded to the Kansas City Chiefs and they were on the road in Denver playing Elway and the Broncos. That game is regarded as one of the best games in the history of MNF. Montana lead a long, last minute drive at the end of the game throwing a touchdown pass to JJ Birden in the final seconds to win the game. It was masterful!!! He would go on to lead the Chiefs to the AFC Championship Game against Buffalo that year. They were in that game right up until the third quarter when he went down with a concussion and the Chiefs ultimately went down in defeat.

I like Elway in this one. Joe was great yes, but the 49ers preyed on a much weaker division ( Saints, Rams, and Falcons ) for ages. The 49ers were basically given 6 games a year. Joe had it easy. Meanwhile Elway played in a very competitive AFC West against the Raiders ( 2 Super Bowls during Elway's tenure ), Chargers ( Fouts ), Chiefs, and Seahawks. He led mediocre to good teams to 5 Super Bowl apperanaces. Not bad.

you have to go with montana the key in your question was last minute superbowl drive montana proved he was built for last minute heroics on the biggest stage doesnt matter what elway did in the regular season if the niners werent so dominate most of the years montana played for them he would most likely have had even more 4th quarter comebacks

Montana, he beat Elways team 55 to 10. but besides that, I would really put Montana in a class by himself,, probably the best Q-back to ever play the game.. I saw him bring the Chiefs back from 3 TDs down in the 4th quarter in the snow in Denver, elway played in that game to. His team lost, and they had the ball last.

I'm thjnking Joe Montana...the guy is just a winner...I know Elway won 2 rings but he didn't win until later in his career when he could rely on Terrell Davis to run the ball.

Elway had game winning drives 47 times in his career, the most ever. I'd go with Elway without hesitation.

I grew up watching both quarterbacks, who were both tremendous in late game situations and won multiple Super Bowls. It's a toss up, but if I had to choose, I would go with Joe Montana. Montana to Rice, in my opinion, is the best quarterback/receiver duo, period.
