Most of them are not inhabited. Most islands are too small. Nobody would live on an island that was only 10 meters long! Or even smaller ...

Akamaru (Wainwright) island has 2 people living on 1.8 sq.km.

You probably need about a square kilometer island to support a population of 1000 people, but that would be very tight and the people would be poor and hungry. A few islands have such a heavy population. Better would be 10 to 50 people per sq.km., if it can be farmed and the fishing is good.

Maybe a person could live for a little while in a little shack on an island only 50 x 50 meters, but the first big storm would drown him. Or he would starve when the fishing was poor.
