In the early to mid 1970s I lived in a small Northern California town up on the coast. It was an area that was very picturesque. Movies were filmed in that location due to the scenery. The population of the town was about 4,400: very small to me since I had grown up in San Francisco!
There were both plusses and minuses. The good things included the gorgeous scenery. We could walk down the little road by our house right to a beach and go whale-watching. Deer regularly wandered on the gravel road in front of the house. The house was surrounded by an acre of pines. The air was clean and it was quiet. People loved coming up to visit us. For them it was a true vacation from the stress and bustle of the urban areas.
The down side was it was very dull if you didn't have a job or kids ( I had neither). People were nosy. Everyone wanted to stick their nose in everyone else's business. There were no fast-food places (which was both good and bad, I guess). Limited shopping choices. Terrible local transportation. One movie theater which showed movies that had been in the big cities eons before!! When we lived in an apt. in town we got cable tv, but once we moved out to the house there was no cable. The weather during the winter sometimes limited our travel: one road got flooded. There were always slow logging trucks hogging the road.
The town I lived in survived on logging and tourism. Redneck attitude abounded.
An interesting life experience I don't regret. But I wouldn't have wanted to remain there forever!

I grew up in a town of about 15000 people. Some people say that's not very small, but I think it's pretty tiny. It was not picturesque because everything was crappy and rundown. There were no businesses in town and the ones that were there usually failed due to lack of sales. There were many hicks who liked to go "muddin" amongst many other white trash activities. Everyone knew everyone and most of my graduating class (2001) still lives there, has 2+ bastard kids, and works a dead end job. It's a dump. Plain and simple. Not all towns are that way, but mine was... and all the tiny towns surrounding it were the same.
Crime was minimal. People were RUDE and expected you to bend over backwards for them, and things were generally crap.

small towns are smaller in proportions, thus the crime rate is low, unless you live in Cairo, IL. people are friendly and they bring you over casseroles or cake for a special occasion; you can use their swing and cross their property without being charge of trespassing; you greet every person you meet on the street, no matter whether you know him/her or not and even have a small talk with him; though in this town everybody knows everything about each other and you can not have secrets from the others, sooner or later it will become public knowledge; the stores and the malls are small and economically such a town depends on one or 2 businesses that are locate in the town, though if you forgot your wallet in the post office you can be sure that they will open it for you in the middle of the night just to return it to you...

They're not red neck places in this day and age. For the most part, the people are more civilized than those in the hearts of the big cities.
Bear in mind that there are a lot of places smaller than LA, that aren't really that small. I think a place of around 50,000 people is ideal, depending on what you like.

Small cities fluctuate, only as massive cities do, and a few small cities are greater friendly than others. There are often academic advantages to residing and going to college in a huge city, because of the fact greater desirable college structures are in a position to teach a bigger form of matters than are taught in small faculties. the foremost question comes right down to: do you like your babies to enhance up able the place maximum human beings come from an identical social type and have comparable stories, or do you like your babies to enhance up with different youngsters from many diverse backgrounds.
