Back then: On the Road by Jack Kerouac, Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger, Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse.
Not sure how I'd feel about them now, but back then they were spiritually and culturally mind-opening for me. They completely broke me out of the cultural mold I was living and made the the person I am today, oh, along with the thousands of other books, friends, teachers, movies and countries that have influenced my along the way. I think those books, though, helped open a closed mind.

Why did everyone say the bible when he asked not to? I'm reading the bible and I've read about incest, treachery, lying, and murder all by the celebrated main characters. I've only read the first 5 books, but how can you say "every word is enlightening" etc. When Moses came down from the mount after receiving the 10 commandments, he found his tribe in a naked orgy, so he killed 3000 people! I can't stand when people suggest the bible is "perfect". I don't think they've even read it! (The four gospels are fantastic, however.... this may be what people are calling "The Bible", because the old testament is filled with stories of a vengeful, jealous God and cheating and controlling leaders who are celebrated for their ability to trick people. Read the bible, people, with your brain open!)

Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged. While I don't buy 100% into Objectivism, the book really emphasized a few things to me that are very important in my life: hard work for the noble cause of work itself, which will, as a side benefit, bring rewards, material or otherwise; the height of each person's achievement is limited only by their vision (there are no limits to what visionaries can achieve).

The Lord of the Flies. It's about a group of boys that get stranded on an island and form into homocidal selfish tribes... it was pretty traumatizing, but that's why it changed a lot of things for me. once you read it, you'll understand... it was just tragic because i honestly believe that that is exactly what would happen, people are animals at heart. it made me think... i like books like that and they are definitly worth reading.

The Dark Tower series by Stephen King. By far the greatest story I've ever read and been the most deeply involved in. Way to long to summarise, but it showed me that life/death is a circle in which we eternally keep trying to "get it right" without necessarily knowing what "it" or "right" is. Everyone could find a character in this story they could identify with - it's a story which deeply affected me and I still think about all the time.

particular. Ravenheart by ability of David Gemmel thoroughly ripped me out of a melancholy. there have been only a super sort of acts of heroism and need that it made me inspired and prefer to bypass out and alter the international for the greater valuable. Its no longer completely unrealistic and fully confident the two...its only very inspiring. I confirmed it to all my pals and now they are all devouring the full sequence =]
