I have a tortise that a friend bought for me in china. It wont eat, and its not hibernating. Please tell me what tortises eat! I tried feeding it lettuce and celery, but all it did was close its eyes for a long time then open it again and stare and stare at me. The tortise is not a turtle. I make it a little home (but the tortise in a wide plastice bucket) in the balcony and it is freezing cold. The windoe has little bits of frost on it. What should i do? If there is anything else that i need to know about taking care of my tortise, then please tell me. If the info is judging on gender, then please tell me hoe to classifly the gender for my tortise. Name your source.

It may not be warm enough. I would try gently warming it in its tank (of if you do not have a tank, use a heating pad set on LOW). Wait about 30 minutes and then try to feed it, because since they are cold blooded if they are too cold they will not eat and if the do it can really harm them. I would go to a petstore today and get a proper set up for tortoise or else it probably will die.

Lets hit this point by point:
- What species of tortoise? Different species have different needs.
- Tortoises that won't eat need to have their basic cares reviewed to figure out what the problem is. What is the species and what are your basic cares?
- Lettuce and celery ARE NOT appropriate diet items for ANY tortoise species, but I need to know the species to advise the right diet.
- A wide plastic bucket is not a good home for a tortoise- WAY too small. Tortoises should have plenty of room to roam.
- Freezing cold? Tortoises LOVE and need warmth. Your poor tortoise is dying. Some species of tortoise CANNOT hibernate, and other species need special attention to hibernate correctly.

"What should I do?" The simple answer is to do a little research. Learn about how to take care of a tortoise.

What kind of tortoise? Most of them need to be in an enclosure with heat and UV lights and can't survive out in the open cold. In the wild many of them burrow in the winter. Lettuce and celery have little nutritional value. If you know what kind it is...look up a caresheet online.

The poster above is right, without the proper care, it will die.

at the beginning, you got here across a tortoise jointly as traveling and desperate to snatch it and take it lower back with you and save it? 2d, you have had the tortoise for 3 months and are actually only asking the thank you to guard it. What have you ever been doing with the tortoise the previous 3 months? My advice for the appropriate care of the tortoise? Take it lower back and launch it to the place it belongs. to procure it from the wild, and that's the place it is going to be.
