John Williams - Theme from Jaws
It's very distinctive and probably evokes a similar response from everyone who hears it.

There have been great movie scores by other American composers, but none nearly as consistent as Williams. Max Steiner immediately comes to mind, but I don't know if he became an American citizen.
While I might argue that Henry Mancini probably has had a bigger impact on American music in general, I have to say Williams is the greatest film composer by virtue of having written so many absolutely wonderful scores for so many absolutely great movies.

I think John Williams is terrific, but I have to give my vote to Elmer Bernstein, for the score of To Kill a Mockingbird, or The Great Escape.

George Gershwin... he was such a natural... other American composers do not quite have anything to compare with 'Porgy and Bess'.
