Dear George,
You need a book from your local lending library on:
Environmental Physics 0r the Built Environment.
Look up something like:
Flanking Transmission
Acoustic Absorption Coefficient
and you will find a lot of analytical stuff.

There are two types of Question:
1 Transmission in Parallel. Such as a wall containing a door.
This makes use of weighted averages where the weighting is proportional to the area of the feature.
2 Transmission in Series: Such as a partition with many layers.
These calculation are based on transmission coefiicients. Most countries have 'standard partitions' which are known to meet the local building regulations. BUT you may need to do the calculations if you are changing the use of a building from say a large private house into appartments, and you need to know how to upgrade existing psrtitions,
Hope this is of some use to you.
