I love using this because it has a double meaning and unless you use it very frequently, people have no idea which of the meanings you're refering to!

If you're trying to stop sounding harsh, good. However then stupid is probably not the next best choice.I've heard "silly," "toast," "weird," "special," "insane," "ignorant,"slow," "dumb," or "brainless."
