Many people responding to my earlier question say that most of the poor people are either from different countries (Not Americans) or substance abusers. Others say that many are poor by American standards but better than undeveloped country poor. Which is better, being poor in a so called "Third World" country and still having dignity or being poor in the US with nobody caring about you? Help ! I am confused to read about this in the US from its own people and no media coverage.

Excuse me, one of the most popular topics in the media is about the rich and the poor. I totally agree with wizard. The old grasshopper and ant story. The ant works hard all summer and has food for the winter. Actually, a huge number of people have found out that if a person is a lazy loser that they can live quite well in the US. The do gooders have, as liberals, put in so many give away programs from the government that nobody starves or goes without shelter, clothes, medical care(you would be surprised at the total care the poor are GIVEN in the US). All at the expense of the workers. It has gotten so ridiculous that the poor think they are OWED TOTAL CARE BY THE WORKERS!!! The welfare children;s goal in life is to grow up and get on welfare just like mommy!! I know what your going to say, but the exceptions prove the rule. Worse than that, people immigrate here and retire on the working peoples Medicare benefits without having worked a day in this country. Clinton did that one. The Welfare system has become like a cancer to the US. It has ruined more people(their entire lives) than it has ever helped.

It's nothing to be confused over. All societies have always had an uneven distribution of wealth.

Some people are good at making money, some are not. Some people put a lot of effort into making money, many do not.

20% of the population always has %80 of the wealth. This is normal and natural. This is not news. If this were not true, then there would be no reason for someone to work hard to be successful. The whole world would suffer. I work smart and hard for my above average income, and I pay such huge taxes to pay for free lunch for lazy people and illegal people that it is hard to keep a roof over my son's head. I have to pay these taxes because idiots in the government think they have the right to play robin hood and steal from the rich (middle class man working 70 hours a week) to feed and house people who don't pull their weight (and typically pop out kids without any consideration of financial responsibility).

Please stop backing up the idiots. What I see you saying is that a man should not receive more for working harder or better.

So, when you worked for your grade in school and did well on a test, you were okay with someone who did not study getting to share some of your points right? The whole class should get the same grade, an average of the total earned points right?

It depends what you mean poverty,a person living in poverty in the US would be a well off person in a 3rd world country, many of the poor in the US brag they don't shop at KMART's because it's below them, weekends are full of those same poor people getting their nails and hair done in salons, nowadays if you want to check who claims they are the poorest, just check how many gold chains are hanging from their neck, the more gold chains the longer that person been poor, and the last part,we hear how many children go to sleep hungry, and then our medical report done by doctors come up and say that more than 60 percent of US kids are obese and developing diabetis as a result and these obese kids are the ones on the poor side.

Because America loves to sell the idea of the "American Dream" and that everyone can be rich when the truth is most people remain in the same class as their parents, and the gap between the poor and middle class is narrowing. If people actually focused in on the extreme poverty, they would revolt and change a few insitutions that the powers that be wish would stay the same.

There's no dignity in poverty - in any country!! (Where do you get that!?).
I'd "STILL" rather be poor in the U.S. than anywhere else in the world!!!!
