In a pregnancy blood test, the hormone they are looking for would be Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a peptide produced during pregnancy.

The very earliest time that a blood test would detect hCG would be at about 8-9 days post conception, because after the egg is fertilized it needs time to make its way out of the fallopian tube, where fertilization takes place, down into the uterus and then be substantially be into process of implantation.

As a general guide, it usually takes about 5-7days for a fertilized egg to arrive in the uterus, and then about another 5-7 days to implant, so all up, pregnancy can usually be detected 10-14 days after conception. It is possible to detect as early as 8 or 9 days, if things were a little ahead of schedule, but even a negative test at 8-9 days does not necessarily mean a women has not conceived.

If you are taking Clomid, depending on the protocol of the clinic it is unlikely a blood test on day 21 would be looking for pregnancy. I am guessing you are taking the drug for ovulation induction? And this is your first cycle? You would most likely have taken it every evening for days 5-9 of your cycle, and then the clinic usually recommends intercourse ever second day from 11 through 15, and then a blood test on day 19 or 20 (or10 days after the last dose of Clomid) should indicate if the dose has worked and if you have ovulated.

A blood test for pregnancy (if you haven't had a period) would normally take place about 16 days after ovulation has been confirmed.

If Clomid doesn't seemt o be working and ovulation has not ocurred, then your clinic may recommend other measures, such as FSH injections.

Good luck.

You should insist that you have an earlier apportionment I'm high risk they double book me on other peoples appointments all the time. I have been bumped off an appointment before. This is what i do to get my way I act really confused and upset. Just say listen I don't understand I've been here for years and I am high-risk (not really but based on age you are!) just get all frantic and say is there anything that can be done it's really important that I see the doc. sooner. Usually they will accommodate you f they can. But if for whatever reason they can't just ask that if a cancellation happens before the 25th which is highly likely see if they can let you know so that you can take that spot if you can make it at that time. BUT I know many Ob's don't see women until after 8 weeks before 8 weeks they really don't do much other than blood work and you can get that done without seeing a doctor but the doc. will call you if there is a problem if not the nurse will just say everything is fine. I think the lack of urgency is because your not 8 weeks yet. Well good luck and congrats!

A blood test will show if you are pregnant or not 7 days following conception.

If you do not chart or monitor your fertility in any way, and you think you may have conceived, you should wait 19 days (or longer) after having sex to test. Why 19?! Sperm can live approximately 5 days in the proper environment; if the sperm managed to live until you popped an egg, the actual conception could have taken place several days after the sex act that got the sperm there. To make sure you're not testing too early, assume the sperm had very long lives (5 days is considered a very long sperm life) and that conception occurred then. Then allow 14 days for the embryo to implant and develop enough hCG to show up on a pregnancy test (96% of pregnant women will test positive by then.)

no I dont think its too soon for you to test at your doctors. Blood tests from your doctors are VERY accurate. I dont think your doctor would let you test if he thought it would be to early.

this is from http://womenshealth.gov/faq/pregtest.htm
"Doctors use two types of blood tests to check for pregnancy. Blood tests can pick up hCG earlier in a pregnancy than urine tests can. Blood tests can tell if you are pregnant about 6 to 8 days after you ovulate (or release an egg from an ovary). A quantitative blood test (or the beta hCG test) measures the exact amount of hCG in your blood. So it can find even tiny amounts of hCG. This makes it very accurate. Qualitative hCG blood tests just check to see if the pregnancy hormone is present or not. So it gives a yes or no answer. The qualitative hCG blood test is about as accurate as a urine test"

Blood tests are extremely accurate and what they look for is a hormone in the blood. Well also have you missed a period? if not yes its way to early you would have to wait till day 24-26 the hormone is still to low at day 21
