I read it's unlucky to wash hair ---> but does this apply to other personal hygeine too?

no, its the same, you can wash hair and keep your personal hygiene. it the respect for our ancestors that we don't do some things like when we don't sweep the floor its the respect for our ancestors that they believed its bad luck, we apply them because of respect, not belief.
