Ok, you know how on the apple commercial, one is called "mac", and the other is "pc"
Well, I thought a Mac was a PC, because PC stands for personal computer. Just because a computer does not run Windows, doesn't mean it's not a PC. On youtube there were really good spoofs of Mac vs PC, and they included Linux. It looked more like operating system verses operating system.
Is mac a PC. If not, why not?

Nailed it. Apple isn't as smart as it tries to portray itself.
Macs are flashy, cute, compact, and hip.
Mac's OS is slower, dumbed down, less powerful, and less compatible.
The preference says a lot about the person...

PC stands for (in this sense) Personal Computer and yes indeed a mac is a PC. However, if you are "in the know" as the marketing jerks for Apple (mac) want to play like you are then you will know that a PC (IBM compatible) generally uses windows OS while a mac using OS10 (unless its gone to 11) which is a touchy-feely UNIX based system.
The mac is probably a more trouble free system because all of its hardware is proprietary; meaning you can only get it from Apple, this includes the OS.
IBM compatible hardware can run UNIX, LINUX, OS, Solarus, and a couple of dozen other platforms but most run Windows. They are trying to let you know that your Windows PC is a piece of crap and that the mac is wonderful.
Well, Windoze does suck and OS10 is much more robust but if you buy a mac your stuck with mack stuff. This is good for a laptop but I still run IBM compatible desktops because of the wide variety of OS's I use.
Hope this helps. It's a stupid commercial and makes me want to throw my mac laptop away!

Well, I get it, but I don't get it. Many of the problems that the Mac commercials describe are actually problems that Windows has, like crashing, installation of drivers and the like. Apple is making fun of IBM clones because they only run Windows. Macs, however, are far more of a monopoly than Windows because they are a pair: OS X and the Mac Computer itself. To run OS X, you must have a Mac, but to run Windows, you can have one of many different types of computers. The reason that Windows is supposedly worse is because it has to deal with a far wider range of hardware than OS X does. Apple knows exactly what will be in every single computer that OS X will be installed on, Windows does not. And since Windows can be run on a Mac now, soon everyone will realize what is a Windows problem, and what is really a hardware problem.
What I don't get is why no one knows the difference between hardware and software problems.

A Mac is a personal computer (PC) but PC has become synonymous with windows so when people say PC these days, they usually mean windows machines.

PC signifies an IBM clone because the first model available to the public was an IBM-PC, the Apple version was called a Macintosh - technically you are correct, it's a matter of semantics

A PC has come to mean an IBM/Dell/Gateway, etc... a machine that runs Windows.
I guess you just can't overthink the abbreviation.
