So I'm a singer-songwriter with about 30 songs I've written and i don't know where to go from here. I guess I should start playing locally but how do i go about doing that?

Start calling your local bars. Good luck!

Yikes! How many times have I heard that? Do you have a demo? Have you played anywhere before? Are there any clubs in your area that do your music? Do you have any friends who like your music? Make a demo first. If you are doing a single act, look for coffee houses...anyplace where there is a potential gig. And I mean ANYWHERE. But you have to have a product to sell and that is your talent. If you play guitar and sing, get a microphone and some kind of recorder. Two mics are better. One for the guitar and one for you and then blend them into a mix that has a balance between the two. Nobody will book you sight unseen. I've been in the biz a long time, and unless you have some outstanding material and talent, you will get nowhere. And you will get nowhere faster if you don't have a demo. Next step is to take that demo to anyone who might give a second listen. I wish you the best of luck. It's a real Jungle out there!

go in and talk to them, your mid sized venues may just accept cd's like a drop box. Leave it with your contact info. Small places you can talk to them more and are a good start. Even if they don't normally have music. Also depends where you are. Big City or small town,

Set up a myspace music account and build up a fan base. Many artists are doing this and being successful at it.

Depending where you live, certain clubs will allow you to perform, if you sell a certain amount of tickets for their club so you can play there. Its a business. Its like paying your way in.

You might want to contact the local newspaper and talk to the entertainment reporter or editor about this.

Setting up a site on MySpace.com is a good idea and posting
what you can sing in Youtube.com is also a good idea.
