A friend of mine has an older computer with windows 98 installed. It had been packed away for about a year. When she unpacked it and set it up, it worked fine for a few weeks, but now she gets the black screen that says "error in disk c" abort/retry. whats the deal?

she doesnt have a recovery disk. i read that we might be able to start in safe mode. and recover that way. How do you reformat a hard drive?

Re-format and install ubuntu..

Disk C: is usually the primary boot drive (the primary hard drive).

Ater sitting for a year, then being used, there could be several things wrong with the drive. I doubt there is physical damage, because it booted and worked for a couple of weeks, unless it was moved immediately before it failed.

I would say that the best course of action would be to format the hard drive, do a scan to identify any bad sectors, then reinstall. Since it has been sitting for a long time, there probably isn;t much onthe computer that is important.

You can reformat it by reinstalling windows. This will solve it and give it a clean start unless the hard drive is actually dead. If that is the case, then you will need buy a new hard drive and then reinstall windows.

Error in disc C: usually means a dead hard drive, sorry to say.

you left a floppy disk in the drive. check that first.
