I just had an umbilical hernia repair that didn't seem crucial because it was just a little bulge above my naval and my old doctor said if it wasn't causing me problems just leave it. Then it was horrible when I was pregnant with my last child. The doctor I see now said it was important to get it fixed because something could get lodged in there in cause problems. The surgeon they sent me to agreed. I would think it would be important in a child also. Get several Dr. opinions. good luck.

First, a child should be seen by a pediatrician. They specialize in childrens illnesses and special needs. If anyone ever says surgery, you always get a second or third opinion. Research it on the internet too, and go to the library and see the JAMA publications for information there. I would additionally research natural methods, see a good naturopath or two in your area.
