Is there a way to use babelfish without being connected to the internet.
It would be so helpful to take my laptop with me but still use the translation feature.

No, Altavista's Babelfish translator is server software and is not written to run on a Windows laptop (or an Apple laptop, and probably not even a Knoppix laptop). They only intend for it to run on their own servers and there is no way to download it or even to get the source code and recompile it as far as I know. Even if it was available the word meaning database would be fairly sizeable and would probably be larger than what you would want on your laptop since it includes so many different languages.

There are software packages available that would do translation to and from just one language. For example, I've seen several of them advertised for Spanish to English and back. I think I have seen similar French packages. So it rather depends upon where you are headed and which language you actually need to have translated.
