It seems like there is a roadside memorial on every other block. Do people do this where you live? Should there be a limit on the length of time such memorials may be allowed to remain?

I think for some people it's just symbolic. If we put a time limit on it they would be upset. It just makes me sad when I go by but really doesn't bother me that it's there

I'm sorry if you find roadside memorials depressing. You are not alone.
Here in New Mexico the Hispanic culture includes creating roadside memorials. Some are better constructed than others. My opinion is if they are built they should be well maintained.
Now for a very personal experience. I had a great girlfriend killed by a drunk driver around 20 years ago. The state put up a sign with her name and photo on the highway ,it included a message about how she was killed. The first time I saw it i was glad I was alone . It was an emotional event for me. I had to stop and spend some time there with her photo and my memories.
Now when I drive by I wave and smile. I hope the signs make people realize what a personal, violent crime drunk driving really is.
I know the people at the county level anti-DWI program and they tell me that the state will not put up any new signs, if they put up a sign for everyone who was murdered by a drunk driver it would make the tourists think New Mexico is a dangerous place to drive.

Some people prefer to put something up where a person has actually died. The thing is, usually these places are bad spots which is why accidents occur in the first place. I see no problem with putting a memorial up for a week, two at the most. However, left up long enough, they tend to become a distraction for drivers and that can cause another accident at the same spot. No roadside memorial should be left up indefinitely.

when I was in Spokane Washington in the 80s, they used to paint a body outline and a message with it - this is where someone was mugged, this is where someone was raped, this is where someone was killed, etc.

Those were permanent - saw them repainting one that was fading - and they could be on the street, a retaining wall, the side of a building - anywhere.

More than a bit creepy, IMO.

And yes, the roadside memorials are where I live -everywhere I've lived. A girl in HS got killed going to fast on a very dangerous mountain curve and shot off the road and hit a large tree about halfway up - the memorial is still on that tree, and I've not been in HS for over 20 years.

yea, i agree.
My brother was killed in a car wreck and my mother....ugh! I didn't think that memorial was ever coming down. There does need to be a limit, it's way too much of a distraction.I always look at them when I see them...then start to think of my bro.
lol, I could have a wreck from looking at them.....then there would be another one...for me! lol then someone else would have a wreck............UGH! it's a vicious cycle!
Honestly, though, it is a touchy subject, mourners need closer and time to heal...but...drivers don't need any more distractions than they already have. So, I think a time limit is a good solution for the two.

It's bad enough for us to pay attention to all the traffic signs and billboards with people already distracted with cell phones, radios, etc. do we really need a reminder of someones tragic death to draw our attention away from what truly matters the most and that's to keep our eyes on the road not your personal lost , after all, thats what obituaries are for....not to mention it is an eye sore to the community...If its that important to you to memorialize someone have place to gather and meet, put an ad in the paper but leave the road alone...I wonder what may have distracted your loved ones on the side of the road that caused them to be the subject of this topic...rest in peace just not on the side of the road.

Have you ever lost a loved one in a car accident? This is where someone they love was killed. Most people loose loved ones in a hospital bed or something like that. This is much different. I have lost someone I loved very much in a car accident. I don't do that because I know she wouldn't want me to but I respect those who do.

I think they are good. And there should be no time limit for them to remain. One thing I think they do is to remind drivers of what could happen to them. They are a good thing.

Why the **** would u care? It's just stating where people have died? Why do you care about people who have died? Sounds like your against respecting dead people. If you had someone that died n a car accident wouldn'y u always remember the spot where they died at? OFCOURES! People do that because it shows how much they loved the people that died! And it shows people not to drive stupid because it could be them!

DER DA DER!
