I have a friend of mine who got his computer piece by piece he took his old hard drive out from his hewlett packard comp. put it in his new computer and when he poot his win98 boot disk in it went through the format process but when it completed the format it said it was unable to install windows on the hard drive. So i took it out of his comp and put it in mine. It shows nothing on the hard drive. As far as i can tell it is completely erased. Why then can he not install windows on it.

Maybe its not large enough, although anything over a gig should be good enough for Win98. Check to see if the disk was formatted correctly and if it has a partition on it.

You may have to format it again. If data on your hard disk is corrupted it is advisable to format the hard disk and reinstall the operating system (usually Windows XP). If a new hard disk is used, you may prefer to partition the hard disk into 2 or more drive. The operating system is installed on the first drive and a backup of the data is stored on the second drive More details at http://fixit.in/format.html

It is not suppost to say Windows can not be installed. Yes you do have to format it. I got my old hard drive 70 Gigs.(only 10 more than what I had) and put it on my PS3...It still worked. Look up CharlietoKind on YouTube. I did a Quick (About 1 Minute) and Full Format (Approx. 370 Minutes is what it exactly said. I still dod it and went to System info and it said 64 Gigs./69Gigs. Make sure it is the same opporating system...Windows 95,Windows 98, 2000, Me, Xp, Vista ect.
