My husband and I were dicussing how neither of us can make eyecontact with people when talking to them, like occasionally, but can keep the stare, its akward to us!

How many of you can/cant keep eye contact...?

ALso, what does it mean if you cant? My husband is confident, I would think he definatly could, I can see why I wouldnt be able too, but it just feel so strange!!

well, i don't think you have to make eye contact and then just stare at them.

i make direct eye contact, and then glance away for a bit. i would say its probably 75 percent eye contact and 25 percent glancing away.

to do more than 75 percent or so would carry with it the implied message of aggression or hostility. to glance away more than 25 percent or so would imply that you're not interested in what the speaker has to say or have low self confidence.

the 75/25 ratio isn't a hard and fast rule. i rely on body language, non-verbal cues the speaker is sending to me and the occasion.

for example, when talking with a complete stranger over something as inconsequential as the weather or asking directions, minimal eye contact may be required. when gazing into my wife's eyes as we talk to each other lovingly---any less than 100 percent eye contact is going to get me in trouble.

this is just like anything else--practice, practice, practice. the more you consciously practice making eye contact for appropriate amounts of time during conversations the more you'll get better and better at it till you're doing it on auto-pilot and not really thinking about it at all.

its a skill just like anything else. you can develop it or not as you see fit.

I always make eye contact I think it establishes trust..if you cant maybe you are shy..I work with the public on a daily basis and some people dont like it when you make eye contact thay will turn away..other people I have had seem to take it as a sign you are hitting on them ..depends on the person I guess

I dont make eye contact when i think about it, but when i'm listening or it's someone important like professor, job interview, officer, etcc I do make eye contact because it shows your paying attention.

I avoid it, but I will if I have to... though I end up making the other person uncomfortable as I end up staring the person down.

Yes. Even if it feels strange, if you practice you will become more comfortable with it.
