There is no left hand side. From the Aft looking forward is Port and Starboard. The Starboard side is the side that you use to board other vessels with, the Port side is the side that is tied to the Quay.
If you are on the Bow looking aft, the Port and Starboard are the same. No matter which area you are at or not at on or in a vessel, there is a Port and a Starboard area. There is a Bow and Astern area. Port is commonly referred to as the Left Side looking Forward from Aft, But Portside is same when looking Aft from Bow, One side is Port, always, one side is Starboard, always.

Starboard is a nautical term refering to the right side of the boat if you are looking to the bow (front) and port would be to your left. Any easy way to remember is that left and port both have 4 letters in them

Are you asking what the opposite side of "STEER-BOARD" is? Starboard is a watered down word when ships went from a side mounted "Steer-board" to a center mounted "rudder" that we all now know of. Galleys and others of the early days used the steer-board, mounted on the right side of the vessel, looking forward, as the rudder but you could not dock the vessel on the "steer-board" side or you would damage it. SO, you docked on the left side only. It became known as the "Port" side because "in Port" you tied up at the dock on the left side.
