alternative and metal are genres of rock
alternative are bands like : taking back sunday, fall out boy, panic at the disco, and bands like those (trying to think of mainstream bands that you'd know)
metal is like "hxc" or hardcore, if you'd like. it's like "screamo" as some call it. there are hardly any mainstream metal bands. norma jean is a good "metal" band.

Alternative is when a band or song is not on any chart. It has nothing to do with the style of music. In the U.S., it's generally associated with the Billboard top 100. A band can be a popular band in one country and an alternative band in another country.

Metal is rock, generally played with the songs having one or more electric guitar solo (nobody sings or plays any instruments except one guy on electric guitar). Drum solos have also been used instead on some songs, but only when the band has a talented drummer.

rock is the general name and alternative and metal are types of rock... bjork, jeff buckley depeche mode radiohead audioslave etc go in alterntaive and some say that more punk style bands go in the alternative genre such as taking back sunday, afi etc... metal also has different types..it is the type with alot of drums, bass .. death metal is when ppl sing with really low voices like children of bodom, cradle of filth, arch enemy, canibal corpse... heavy metal is scorpions, led zeppelin, deep purple... theres alternative metal which is like system of a down,, nu metal is slipknot, korn and thrash metal is megadeth, metallica etc... theres alot
