I didn't start wearing tampons til after I was 18 and yes I'm still a virgin. As for the issue of my hymen that wasn't broken til I had my first pelvic exam and pap smear at 18 because a dr used a regular sized instrument used for the exam itself. It is true that the word "virginity" can mean different things in different cultures and religions but in the medical sense of the word it means someone who has never had sex.

The thing I didn't like about tampons (and I used OB tampons b/c I didn't have to worry about cardboard applicators) is that sometimes when I would try to put a new tampon in my vagina would be dried out. I also found out that if I didn't place it the right way I would actually hurt more when I would be sitting.

The other thing I noticed is that if I didn't change the tampons on schedule (such as every 4 hours, I tried to do it every 3 to be on the safe side) that the blood of my period would come down the string that sticks out of your vagina and sometimes spot my panties.

I have gone back to pads in the past 5 years b/c of medical reasons unrelated to tampons themselves.

It sounds to me like your mom is concerned b/c of your age and also as some of the others said the issue of toxic shock syndrome.

I'm with you, I hate pads and have not used them since Jr. High. The only thing worse than being on your period is having to sit in it all day. If your mom is saying they aren't good for you she's probably concerned with TSS and the fact that you are so young, she's probably just concerned you won't be responsible about changing them frequently enough. You might let her know that you are aware of Toxic Shock Syndrome and know how important it is that you don't leave them in for more than a few hours at a time, and ask if she would just buy one box so you can try them. Using tampons will make your life a lot easier in the long run because that way you can still do stuff like swimming when you have your period, and you'll feel a lot more normal than having a pad in your underwear.

This may just be your mother's personal preference.

While tampons are associated with TSS, you can also develop it from pads, and there are several recorded cases of *men* getting TSS! Unfortunately, not many people know this as it's not widely reported.

I got my period at 8 y/o and swapped to tampons at 10 y/o. I have not used a pad in 16 years now! It was the best decision I ever made.

Perhaps one of your mother's concerns (common, though erroneous) is that using a tampon may affect your virginity or your hymen (if you're not sexuallty active already). Tampons do not affect your status in that department!

I would suggest that if you're dead set on using tampons, you do your research to indicate how safe they are to your mother. However, as everybody has been warning...do not forget to change them. Tampons are good for up to eight hours, but you should only ever use the lowest absorbency to meet your needs. You'll learn which works best for you by trial and error.

If tampons are left in to long the can cause Toxic Shock Syndrome, a very serious disease that can kill you. plus tampons can also cause more painful cramps, and that is the last thing you want to deal with. The new Always extra thin heavy days soaks up the blood better than other kinds of pads, and prevents accidental transfer. Good Luck

well tampons require more responsiblity, and more self awareness of your body than pads. if you are young, and you JUST got your period....i don't think you need them right now. get to know your body first....recognize what cramps feel like, etc.. because there is such thing as Toxic Shock Syndrome that you can get from tampons...and if you don't know the difference between your bodies normal reaction to your period...and something that is really wrong...it could actually result in death. also, you MUST change them regularly, and sometimes young people are so busy with friends, doing whatever, that they aren't thinking about it...and it can be very unhealthy to keep them in for so long.

there are some religions and cultures who look down on tampons because...yeah, like you said...maybe they think you won't be a virgin anymore, or that you'll want to do something else!! well....they never made me want to do something else, so..i don't really understand that idea. but i can see how your mom might be nervous that her "little girl" was growing up too fast. try to understand how she feels. that idea aside, i still think you need to wait a while and get to know your body.

If you are going to wear a tampon, you should be very careful. Make sure you change them every four hours!!

Read all of the warnings in little insert in the box for the best information.

Only buy Tampax brand, it's the only brand that doesn't have a recorded case of TSS.

You are still going to see blood and possibly get it on your hands, get over it, it's just a little blood.

You should do some research on the internet. Also research Instead Cups.

Tampons can give you TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome), which is very painful and not healthy. Look up TSS up for detailed informaion. I am the same way with pads and I hate them. Just be very careful and DON'T ever leave a tampon in for longer than 8 hours! I try to change mine ever 4 hours to be safe.

Tiff I used tampax pearl and had gotton TSS...

You can get TSS (toxic shock syndrome) if you are sensitive to the chemicals they use in tampons. You chances of getting TSS are also increased if you keep the tampons in beyond the recommended amount of time (ex. never keep them in overnight, or to be safe for more than 2-4hrs)

Unless your going swimming, or wearing something very tight fitting where a pad would be obvious, its probably to your health's benefit to just use a pad.

Trust your mom, she knows what she's talking about.

First tampons are no longer evil, undesirable or ordinary for women persons to placed on. in the experience that your mom is religious, she may be apprehensive approximately it getting rid of your virginity (braking your hymen), which it won't, or apprehensive approximately TSS (poisonous ask your self Syndrome), or purely basic apprehensive you is purely no longer responsible with them (they ought to get replaced each 8 hours). i understand women persons who placed on in basic terms pads, in basic terms tampons or a mix of the two. the two way, pads or tampons, they do their activity, in reality pads are relatively greater powerful, considering you hardly have leaks and have no danger of infections. Tampons do carry a small danger of TSS, which would be deadly. It happens in case you do no longer substitute it after 8 hours, and the micro organism develop and make you very very ill. I have been given TSS, two times (your danger is greater each and every time you have it), the two situations required a stay interior the scientific institution, and it grow to be depressing. that's alright to placed on the two. They make pads now that are great skinny and absorbent, so they do no longer sense any different than a pantiliner. i understand when I first have been given my era (11 years in the past), pads felt like diapers, yet those now sense rather wide-spread. purely placed on pads till your older, then you definately may additionally make the choice to modify to tampon's in case you elect.

The reason your mom don't want you to use tampons is because, they can make you very sick. what I mean is that when you use pads you change them more often and when some girls/women use tampons they think that they don't need to change them as often when that is not the case. So you mom is just looking out for your safety.
