Good questions. Yes, most African Americans are of mixed African, Native American, and European blood, as a result of both slave rapes, and marriages to Native Americans. But, sadly, due to the U.S.'s "one drop" rule, African Americans are not recognized for their diverse ancestry, and are often just classified as "black." I myself am of African, Dutch Indonesian, and Cherokee descent, and proud.

Native Americans and African Americans share several points in history. For example: during the civil rights movements led by African Americans such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Malcom X, and the Black Panther Party - Native people were having their own movement, the American Indian Movement (the Black Panthers actually helped this movement).

Native people also helped to free slaves. Since Native people were considered a soviergn nation, if an African American person lived on a reservation they could not be taken back as a slave for White people. Unfortunately I have heard that some Natives had slaves themselves, although I don't know much of the history behind this. I do know that they helped.

Because of the shared points in history many African American people "got with" Native people and had babies. Many many African American people have Native blood for these reasons.

By the way, I am a Native Woman.

Most people that are currently referred to as African American will have a percentage of caucasian blood in them, especially if their family has lived here for a considerable amount of time. It is what accounts for the different shades of color and the extreme diversity. African Americans have far more caucasian ancestry than native american because the majority of native americans had already been wiped out before the Africans started arriving in the US in any kind of large numbers. Therefore, as the country is predominantly caucasian, it makes good sense to realize that with each generation the percentage of caucasian blood in African Americans will increase.

Incidently, the 'one drop' theory is a US thing...and isn't supposed to include those that have any kind of european ancestry. Generally speaking, in most of the world (especially Europe), just one drop of caucasian blood makes a person white.

I depends. I was born in African, yet people consider me to be an African-American, although I have no American blood in me. Still, I think you're right, most African-Americans are descendants of African slaves who intermarried/had children with Caucasians or Native Americans. But, for the most part, the term African-American describes any black person who lives in America.

Yes. Because of the one drop rule. Mixed people were automatically considered Black and not mixed. Those mixed people brought that european/native amer./asian blood into the black community.

But there are also white americans that can be mixed with black or NA too. A lot of light skinned blacks "passed" for white(mostly greek, portuguese, or spanish) and married a white person, who didn't know of their Black heritage and their child was raised as white. and there were some relations between NAs and whites.
