"Alternative" music was coined as underground music post punk, that was often played on college radio stations, non-mainstream music.
Today, you can turn on the radio or tv and hear "adult-alternative" and "alternative" and i think in the US, the terms refer to a difference in generations of music listeners.
The adult alternative music appeals to ppl who listened to post-modern 80s 90s music, ie cure, rem, nirvana, sisters of mercy where todays "alternative" would be appealing to a younger listening audience who likes bands like interpol, chemical romance, etc.
the listeners of each genre definately cross over, almost as if the bands classified as "adult-alternative" were musical inspirations or predecessor of bands now classified as "alternative".
