How do you stop it? Accidents happen and, with the number of people driving these days, that means loads of people die every day on the highways. A great many features are already present in cars to reduce the likelihood of death from seat belts to air bags. But there's really only so much you can do.
Just think of how many people would be getting killed without all of the safety features we have today. We are getting better. But we'll never see complete success.

It's always been like that - not just with cars. 300 years ago, some of those sailing ships had a 25-50% mortality rate on their trips, due to disease and malnutrition, and people were OK with that. People used to break their necks falling off horses a lot too, probably, and people now wonder why everyone would risk their lives travelling like that.
In 100 years there will be a safer form of travel than cars, and people then will look at cars and wonder why anyone would strap themselves into a deathtrap like that.
I see what you're saying though. Nearly everyone knows at least one person who was killed or maimed in a car wreck, and no-one considers that odd.

People die because some of them drive like morons, the other unfortunate few die because they are victims of people who are morons. The amount of death is an acceptable amount, now if 50% of people driving died every day in car accidents, then people would freak out. Remember the downside of living is that some day you will die of something, the goal is to make it as long a life as you can.

i have no clue to this, i can't understand the same thing, all across America the speed limit it no more than 75 but yet vehicles read 80+ on the speedometer. than you have people who will push their speed to the limit. some vehicles read 110+, that's how my kid was killed. when the driver push it to the limit at 120 and lost control. killing all in the vehicle. when i asked my lawyer how this can be, and why there aren't strong laws against the manufacturers on putting speedometers readings so high. he said that it would be a waste of time and money to try to pursue this in court because it just won't pass. let alone being heard from anyone. but yet they all know and understand speed kills. they regulate the speed limit signs why not the speedometer readings.

To take your mind off Iraq, think real hard about a plan to legislate stupid and still get where we're going. For me it's at least a 75 mile round trip for groceries and other supplies once or twice a month and there are no buses or trains going my way.

What do you propose? Check points every few miles to make sure that a) your seat belt is fastened, b) you don't have a cell phone on, c) the car is checked for every safety factor (brake check, light check, steering check, etc.). People simply do stupid things all the time, and cars fail mechanically all the time, or there is just simply accidents that occur all the time. The only thing you can do is not drive.

Well the UK is one of the safest places to drive in Europe. You should try driving in some places on the continent. I live in lithuania. They don't accept it as natural waste as the death toll is about 1500 out of a population of 3 mill. Work it out.
