Because every year actually consists of 365.25 days, not 365. Obviously, this is not a convenient number to work with, so on the 4th year, the 0.25's add up to make 1, and an extra day is added.

Because it takes about 365.25 days for the Earth to orbit the Sun. As a result, we need to 'add' a year every 4 years if we are to have a 365 day calendar that doesn't creep.

because our calender doesn't have the perfect number of days. there are actually 365 and a quarter days per year. so every four years we take an extra day to put us back in sync with our place in relation to the sun.
